Comprehensive pet health info from Trim Pet Hospital: vaccination schedules, surgery aftercare, spay/neuter benefits, heartworm, and parasite prevention for dogs and cats.
Vaccinations are an essential part of preventive healthcare for your pet. Thanks to modern vaccines, dogs and cats are protected from serious infectious diseases such as rabies, distemper, hepatitis, and more.
While many of these illnesses have become rare, they have not disappeared — lapses in vaccination can lead to new outbreaks. Because some diseases can spread from animals to people, keeping your pet vaccinated also helps protect your family and the community.
As is the case with any medical decision, you and your veterinarian should make vaccination decisions after considering your pet’s age, lifestyle, and potential exposure to infectious diseases.
Vaccine reactions are very rare. In general, most vaccine reactions/side effects (such as local pain and swelling) are self-limiting and last around 24 hours. Allergic reactions are less common and usually occur soon after vaccination. If you see such a reaction, please contact a veterinarian as soon as possible.
In a small number of patients, vaccines can stimulate the patient’s immune system against their own tissues, resulting in diseases that affect the blood, skin, joints, or nervous system. Again, such reactions are exceedingly rare but can be life-threatening. There is a very small risk of a growth developing at the vaccination site. This occurs more commonly in cats, but is still very rare. Please contact us for more information about vaccinations for your pet.
