Dr Asoka Kukulege

Dr Asoka graduated as a DVM and completed a Masters in dairy science and technology from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, at one of the most beautiful campuses in the world. Many years as a young veterinarian, she channeled most of her energy to mediate programs to improve not only animal health, but also living conditions of farmers in many rural areas.

She and her family then moved to Canada, and, upon a brief tenure in the research field and completion of the Veterinary Skills Training and Enhancement Program at the University of Guelph, she completed her North American DVM licensure at the University of Prince Edward Island.

Since then, Dr Asoka has enjoyed working as a small animal practitioner for over five years in one of the busiest clinics in Medicine Hat, Alberta, and gained lots of experience in small animal internal medicine, surgery and dentistry. In 2017, she made Ottawa her home with her family and continued her career as an emergency veterinarian before joining our clinic in 2019.

While at home, she loves to tell all about her daily encounters with all kinds of pets at the clinic to her puppy Binoo, the Samoyed!

Anabelle Bray, RVT

Registered Veterinary Technician

Anabelle graduated form the veterinary technician program at College Boreal in February 2020, joining our clinic not long after. She became registered in 2021. Anabelle has had a passion for animals and becoming a technician had always been a dream.

In her free time she loves to spend time with her dogs, Tobi and Willow, do some baking, and multiple outdoor activities. Anabelle is also bilingual (English/French).

Serenna Teske, VA

Veterinary Assistant

Serenna was born and raised in Orléans. She completed the Veterinary Assistant program at Algonquin College in February 2022 and joined Trim Pet Hospital in January 2020. She has always had a love for animals, and loves working with them every day.

When she’s not working, you will find her spending time with her dog, Lizzie, and two cats, Marble and Lincoln. She loves to bake, paint, do crafts, spend time with her family, and go on long walks with Lizzie.

Malithi completed her BSc in Translational and Molecular Medicine at uOttawa in 2023, and joined our team that same year. She loves all animals and has a passion for healthcare.

It’s almost time to protect your canine and feline family members from heartworm, flea, and tick-borne diseases. At Trim Pet Hospital, we remind Orleans pet owners that ticks are active whenever the weather is above 0°C – and they can even be found in your own backyard here in Orleans, Cumberland, and Navan.

Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and can be fatal if left untreated. Once a mosquito bites an infected animal, it picks up microscopic heartworm larvae and passes them to your pet during its next meal. These larvae migrate to the heart and lungs, maturing into adult worms that can reach 14 inches in length. The result? Coughing, exercise intolerance, and eventually congestive heart failure.

The good news is that heartworm disease is entirely preventable with monthly anti-parasitic medication. At Trim Pet Hospital, we carry safe, effective preventatives that kill the larval forms of the worm before they can cause damage. Treatment for an existing infection, on the other hand, is risky, expensive, and requires multiple injections over several days.

Ticks in the Ottawa region carry Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis – serious illnesses that can affect your dog’s joints, blood cells, and overall health. Fleas cause intense itching, allergic reactions, and can transmit tapeworms.

We recommend starting preventatives in May and continuing until at least November. However, with milder winters, some veterinarians now advise year-round protection.

Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting time for any Orleans family. But with that excitement comes responsibility – especially when it comes to vaccinations. At Trim Pet Hospital, we help new puppy owners navigate the essential vaccine schedule that protects their furry family members from serious, preventable diseases.

Puppies are born with temporary immunity from their mother’s milk, but this protection begins to fade between 6 and 8 weeks of age. That’s when the first round of vaccines becomes critical.

Core vaccines every puppy needs:

The DAPP vaccine (Distemper, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza) requires three doses. The first dose is given at 8 weeks, the second at 12 weeks, and the third at 16 weeks. After the initial series, your dog will need a booster every one to three years depending on the vaccine type.

The rabies vaccine is legally required in Ontario. It is given at 16 weeks of age, with boosters every one to three years.

Optional but highly recommended vaccines for Orleans dogs:

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease spread through wildlife urine in standing water – common in Ottawa’s green spaces. The vaccine requires an initial dose at 12 weeks, a booster 3-4 weeks later, then yearly protection.

Lyme disease is transmitted by black-legged ticks, which are prevalent in the Ottawa Valley. The Lyme vaccine series starts at 12 weeks, requires a booster, then yearly maintenance.

Bordetella (kennel cough) is an oral vaccine often required for daycare, boarding, or training classes. It is given at 12 weeks and then yearly.

After each vaccination, monitor your puppy for mild side effects like temporary fatigue or slight swelling at the injection site – these usually resolve within 24 hours. Serious allergic reactions are extremely rare but require immediate veterinary attention.

Pets age faster than humans – much faster. Dogs and cats are generally considered “senior” around 7 to 8 years of age, though larger dog breeds may reach their golden years earlier. Physical signs of aging in dogs and cats:

Senior blood work panels help us establish baseline values for your pet’s organ function. Dental cleanings become increasingly important because dental pain affects appetite and overall health.

At home, you can help your senior pet by providing orthopedic beds, using ramps or stairs for furniture access, maintaining a healthy weight, and keeping food and water bowls easily accessible.
